Abstract:

Violent phenomena resulting from the magnetic activity of the Sun are responsible for non-recurrent disturbances in the interplanetary medium and interact with the Earth magnetosphere to cause severe geo-effective storms. To understand the underlying processes, a multi-wavelength analysis is performed to precisely identify the solar sources of coronal mass ejections and magnetic clouds, and to derive the continuous emerging magnetic flux coming from the active region. In order to estimate the magnitude and the time duration of the magnetic energy release in the interplanetary medium, methods to determine the free magnetic energy of the active region using maps of the vector magnetic field and inversion codes are presented.
