Abstract:

A promising path towards energy sustainability is to increase the fraction of grid energy supplied by renewable sources such as solar and wind. A key factor preventing further penetration of renewables is the intermittent nature of these energy sources, and the lack of cost-effective energy storage options to counteract intermittency. My talk will describe the development and demonstration of a novel, low cost flow battery architecture which does not require costly ion exchange membranes to achieve multiple charge/discharge cycles. The battery exhibits dramatically improved power density, current density, attained cycles, and round-trip energy efficiency compared to previously reported membraneless (laminar flow) electrochemical energy systems. During the second part of the talk, I will present my work towards the development of an emerging water desalination technique we termed “flow-through electrode capacitive water desalination”.
