Abstract:

Understanding the competition between order and disorder in nature is a major task of physics. Systems that exhibit a sudden emergence of collective interactions allow a unique glimpse into this competition. For instance, such ‘collectiveness’ conveniently exists at the superconducting-to-insulating transition (SIT) and the para-ferro transition. Yet, challenges associated with preparing and characterising nanoscale superconductors and ferroics have hindered their scientific and technological potential.[1,2] We will discuss the ferroelectric size-dependence,[2,3] including recently-discovered hybrid ferroelectric-ferroelastic domain types [4] that assist us in resolving the longstanding dispute over the ferroelectric domain switching mechanism.[5] Likewise, universal size effects in superconductivity near the superconducting-to-insulating transition will be presented,[6] as well as implications for advanced nano-superconducting systems. Finally, some potential future avenues for exposing the onset of collective interactions in superconducting and ferroic systems will be suggested.
