Abstract:
Rotation curves of galaxies are an important method for measuring dark matter distributions on galactic scales. In the local universe spiral galaxies are dark matter dominated within the scales of the galactic disk. Using high resolution MPE-IR led observations of massive star-forming galaxies at redshifts z~1-2 in Ha and CO(3-2) from the Very Large Telescope, NOEMA and ALMA, we investigated rotation curves near to the peak of galaxy evolution. The results are described in Nestor et al. 2022 (arXiv:2209.12199, ApJ accepted). Unlike the Local Universe and in some contrast with cosmological simulations, galaxies at that epoch appear to lack dark matter on galactic scales with significant dynamical contributions due to asymmetric drift . The dark matter halos may be “cored” over ~5 kpc scales, and this may be due to redistribution of the dark matter via intense feedback.
