Abstract:
I will introduce charge regulation as a mechanism involved in the charge regulation of soft matter specifically, providing a few examples from the world of proteins, lipids and viruses.
The mesoscale description of charge regulation will then follow based on different free energy models describing the adsorption/desorption or protonation/deprotonation equilibria.
I will then focus on different phenomena that are specific for Coulomb interactions in charge regulated systems: dependence of charge on pH, charge regulation driven macroion and polyelectrolyte solution condensation, charge symmetry breaking and finally curvature effects in charge regulation, trying to convey the idea that the nature of charging mechaism has a very important effect on electrostatic interactions in soft matter.
