The Russian Academy of Sciences is the highest scientific entity in Russia, which aggregates the top scientists in Russia. Each year, the academy grants membership to a few exceptional foreign scientists, from the international community.

In a ceremony held on Friday 15 November, Prof. Zvi Ben-Avraham was elected as one of the foreign members of the academy. Professor Ben-Avraham is the Israeli Prize laureate and a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences.

Zvi conducted numerous scientific projects to study the world oceans, wrote hundreds of peer-review papers and books, and supervised dozens of graduate students. Zvi founded and directed Dead Sea research center, the Israeli Center for Mediterranean Research, the Charney School of Marine Sciences, and revolutionized marine sciences in Israel.

Professor Ben-Avraham joins a small group of four Israelis who have already been elected as foreign members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, including the Nobel Prize laureates Prof. Dan Shechtman (Technion) and Prof. Aharon Ciechanover (Technion), Prof. Joshua Jortner (Tel Aviv University), former president of the Israeli Academy of Sciences, and the Turing prize laureate Prof. Shafi Goldwasser (Weizmann Institute).
