A message from the Head of the School of Physics and Astronomy
Welcome to the School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University. The School was founded in 1963 and is nationally and internationally recognized as a leading academic institute for research and teaching.
Searching for the unknown
The School has three research departments: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics and Particle Physics. We currently employ 46 faculty members, who teach more than 500 undergraduate and graduate students.
Our faculty members are leaders in scientific research in many fields of modern physics, from the sub-atomic world of elementary particles and nuclear physics, through condensed matter physics, biophysics, nano-technology, optics and applied physics to cosmology and the study of the universe. The School offers a wide variety of academic programs and research venues for undergraduates and graduate students alike.
Studying at the School
The undergraduate programs are designed to provide students with a solid background in physics and mathematics, and introduce them to the vast scope of modern research in physics. Physics graduates from Tel Aviv University are well prepared for academic research as well as for lead positions in research and development teams in the high-tech sector. The Physics curricula are considered to be among the most challenging on campus. In addition to comprehensive frontal teaching in auditoriums, recitation classes and laboratories, the courses build independent learning and research skills. The teaching staff, all of whom are top tier researchers, are supported by an excellent team of teaching assistants and laboratory instructors who are graduate students in our M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs.
The School of Physics and Astronomy offers several undergraduate programs. These include a single major physics program, a variety of double-majors combining physics and mathematics, computer science and quantum computing, geoscience, chemistry, electrical engineering, life sciences, brain sciences and others. Each program is made up of courses that provide a mathematical and computational foundation, along with core courses such as mechanics, electromagnetism, optics and waves and thermal physics. The more advanced courses cover analytical mechanics and electromagnetism as well as quantum mechanics and statistical physics. All students acquire experimental skills in modern instructional laboratories throughout their course work. Toward the end of their degree programs, elective courses from various fields of research in the School can be taken, and include introduction to solid state physics, astrophysics and particles and nuclei.
The School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University promotes excellence in studies and research. We have a honors program for outstanding students, as well as special research projects for top 3rd year undergraduates, where students are integrated into ongoing research during their undergraduate years. Top undergraduates are strongly encouraged to pursue their graduate work in the School's internationally acclaimed M.Sc. and Ph.D. research and study programs, which have contributed to important advances in science and technology.
