Abstract:
Cancer is one of the most common causes of death in the developed countries. Radiation therapy plays an increasing role in the treatment of cancer patients. In several aspects this treatment is based on technologies developed in nuclear and particle physics. In the presentation I will briefly introduce cancer and its treatment. I will explain some of the developments from particle physics that help to optimize the treatment. This will include the simulation of treatments with GEANT4, the measurement of basic properties for hadron therapy (nuclear cross sections), and the development of in-situ monitoring of the beam applications.
