City, Environment and Planning
Combines social knowledge with environmental knowledge in the context of urban planning and environment

This discipline incorporates social and environmental knowledge, as related to the urban environment.

City, Environment and Planning is an undergraduate and graduate area of research which focuses on local and global challenges that planners and decision-makers face, particularly regarding rapid urban growth, aging, resource-management, technologies in cities, social and ethnic conflicts and hazard scenarios.

By analyzing geographical and social data, and initiating a multiple analysis of the built environment, this essential area of research aims to deal with future challenges of human environments in cities. There is a high demand for graduates of this discipline in government offices, local municipalities, the Ministry of Defense and private planning offices that promote physical and social planning policies. This field of work includes transportation, urban planning, social planning and soil and vegetation.

Within the M.A. studies in our department, it is possible to study this area within the Environment, Society and Planning Program. The aim of this specific program is to create a common multidisciplinary language between environmental and social issues and to implement this shared approach in urban planning. Graduates of the Environment, Society and Planning Program receive a special certificate of their studies.

The program includes core courses focusing on urban planning, social and human aspects of environmental problems, and also methodological courses including, among other qualitative methodologies for urban planning, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing and a range of practical courses dealing with issues of urban and environmental planning.

It is possible to take Core Studies on Urban and Regional Planning which is part of the Environment, Society and Planning Program. Students who successfully graduate in these core studies can be registered as planners with the Israel Planners Association.
