Abstract:
The fine-structure constant (α~1/137) - a fundamental dimensionless number of Nature, bridging quantum mechanical and relativistic features, relating the elementary charge, the speed of light and Planck constant, arose in 1910s while treating spectral lines and spin-orbit coupling. It determines scales of energy, velocity and length.
